Venga Boys - We Like to Party (1999)
Great merengue song. The beat from the song was used in numerous fun ads for Six Flags, with an old man with a cane (actually a young pro dancer with makeup) dancing up a storm.
Nelly - Ride wit Me (2001)
Avril Lavigne
Sk8er Boi (aka Skater Boy) (2002)
A good story, very well told. Avril rocks.
Girlfriend (2007)
She did this in a dozen langauges, once heard a mix with all of them, wow. All the voices in the chorus are hers.
What the Hell ? (2011)
Premiered on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve !
Michael Andrews/Gary Jules - Mad World (2003)
See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N3N1MlvVc4&NR=1 , a great video.
Also see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7Ig2JJRpdo&NR=1 ,
the video for Gears of War - Mad World (Extended Version).
Originally by Tears for Fears (1982), "Mad World" achieved a second
round of success after it was covered by Michael Andrews and
Gary Jules for the film Donnie Darko (2001).
An increasing cult following spawned by the movie's 2002 DVD release finally prompted Jules and Andrews to issue the song as a proper single in late 2003.
Bowling for Soup - 1985 (2004)
Time has passed someone by, as in Springsteen's Glory Days.
The Killers - Somebody Told Me (2004)
Post-punk at its best.
Akon - Lonely (studio version) (2005)
A sad story, beautifully and quietly told. In the background a synthesized, high-pitched, and distorted voice sings phrases from the classic Mr. Lonely, sounding surreal and eery, a machine with a broken heart. The rebirth of a classic.
Gwen Stefani
Rich Girl (2005)
Wonderful take on The Fiddler on the Roof classic Rich Man.
Wind It Up (2006)
The Sound of Music goatherd yodeller song, integrated with hard, sensual rhythm music.
Kelly Clarkson - Walk Away (2006)
A powerful female reply to the classic rock male song/question: "Should I Stay or Should I Go ?"
Pink
Stupid Girls (2006)
Straight at Paris, Lindsay, etc.
U + Ur Hand (2006)
Pink dumps a Bud Lite kind of guy.
Who Knew (2006)
Rihanna
S.O.S. (2006)
Shut Up and Drive (2007)
Who knew that driving (with the right passenger) and sex are the same thing ?
My dance instructor Cezara and I love to cha-cha to this.
Nelly Furtado
Promiscuous (2006)
Great dialogue that actually goes somewhere. Each sees the other as promiscuous, I'm not sure either of them actually is.
Maneater (2006)
Give It to Me (2006)
The sexiest voice out there.
Daddy Yankee - Rompe (2006)
Sexy party stuff.
Gnarls Barkley - Crazy (2006)
Crazy good.
Shakira - Hips Don't Lie (2006)
Meant more to be watched than heard. Real Middle Eastern dancing by the diva.
Cascada - Every Time We Touch (2006)
Old-fashioned romance.
Lady Gaga
The Madonna of the (early) 21st century.
Bad Romance (2008)
"I don't want to be friends. I want your love and I want your revenge."
Given a choice between a bad romance and a good friendship with a woman he desires, any man would go for the bad romance. The Lady knows. A refreshing departure from "Let's just be friends."
The video depicts Lady Gaga as a sex slave (of the music industry ?) and articles have been written about its symbolic and occult meanings.
Telephone (2009)
Lady Gaga "vants to be left alone."
For those who don't know what I'm talking about, that's a reference to the great Greta Garbo. She and Marlene Dietrich defined the 20th century femme fatale: hauntingly beautiful, charismatic, divine, enigmatic, effortlessly seductive.

Useful! Thanks! Now, I can vet your choices with my grandson, Johanna, my nephews, etc.
Would you be willing to add YouTube links for these items?
Dad and Mike,
my favorite choices from this list are (in no particular order):
Venga Boys "We Like To Party"
Nelly Furtado "Maneater"
Gwen Stefani "Wind It Up"
Akon "Lonely"
Daddy Yankee "Rompe"
They all have great beats; Venga boys were a great 90's group (and still popular in the clubbing scene--more Ibiza Islands Europe-ish)... Gwen Stefani is an amazing artist; her videos are pure art, and her use of this old "Sound of Music" beat is incredible! Akon is a great "new" artist and has a wonderful singing range... And Daddy Yankee--my mouth and heart are part Latina, need I say more?? He's the founding father of Reggaetone!! Good choices Mike! I hope you check them out, Dad.

Thank, Felsha, for the thumbs up and the insightful comments.
Yes Ted I'll gradually post some YouTube links. In the meantime I'd like to get some reviews from you and please pass along the opinions of your young family members.
re: FZ's short list:
Venga Boys "We Like To Party"
Very very happy! I will watch this again, when my cubelife is getting me down. I'm gonna dance in New Zealand, though!
Nelly Furtado "Maneater"
Sometimes i dance like that. I mean when we go clubbing in Portland and stay up late.
Gwen Stefani "Wind It Up"
Amazing overload! I need to watch this several times.
Akon "Lonely"
Very impressive collage
Daddy Yankee "Rompe",
It get the impression someone is pissed off about global warming.
Goodness gracious, these youngsters move around so QUICKLY!

Ted, I added a 2011 Avril Lavigne song. She premiered it on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve (just after midnite I think) but in any case it wasn't released until 2011.
I do still listen regularly to Top 40 on my car radio, and like a lot of the songs, but they don't quite make the bar. I don't add a song unless there's something special about it for me. I like most of Katy Perry and Brittney Spears' hit songs. Perry's I Kissed a Girl stimulates a lot of fantasies.
